GLOSSARY

You can’t just play it, you have to talk about it too……. Greg Pines

Missing One: when you lose a washer while playing and you’re now “missing one”…happened to Aaron and Greg during WSOW 5 and they had to use a spare washer, it can be very frustrating and distracting because you spend the rest of the day looking over your shoulder and under cabinets looking for the missing one, and then thinking that maybe someone took it and is having some fun with you.

Slick Willy: when the washer gets lodged underneath the rail and it actually is sticking out the other side…check out the picture

Boomerang: when your washer that misses the box rolls back to you…..doesn’t happen on grass though…there has been some very brief discussion on whether you should be able to throw it again.

Caveman: when you don’t have a monsterstick and you have to pick up the washers by hand. (discovered this term when Aaron’s gold monsterstick’s magnet broke probably cause he was throwing it around in anger previously)

Laundromat : the ultimate wash…..when three or more players all wash their pts .

Perfect Game : shutout and finishing with both gold

Shutout : beating the opponent and they don’t score any pts.

Walk-Off : when you end the game on a cup to win, just like hitting a game winning homerun.

Hide and Seek: when you spend time looking for a washer that seems to be hiding.

Wash: it’s when points in the box/cup cancel out so no points are scored

Catch and Release: it’s when you pickup your opponents washers with your monsterstick and then drop them back on the ground. It is part of the monsterstick etiquette to pick up your own washers, it really slows down the game when you pick up other peoples washers with the sticks.

Can’t Remember the Score: self explanatory, but we need a better name for this, it happens a lot when people are talking about other things while they are playing, they pick up washers and 1 of 2 things happen. 1) The forget what was in the box or 2) They forget what the score was before the turn….as of now there is no instant replay or cameras set up, maybe someday.

The Mason or the Bricklayer: definitely need a better name for this, but it’s when you are playing in the “New Washer Stadium” and the washer bounces off the bricks and into the box.

Boston Red Sox: this is when you come back from a huge deficit, either behind in a series or being down in a game like 14-0 and come back and win.

The Ridiculous: this is when you throw a washer that is way right or way left and it somehow bounces back in the box because the grass is inconsistent….it is so ridiculous.

Trampoline : when you throw a washer that is in the box and trampolines out. It is very unfortunate.

Canoe Race:  when the score goes up by one each turn and alternates…..basically the game is going slow, it’s the opposite of a boat race.

Cecil Fielder: when playing in the New Washer Stadium, this happens if you throw one way to far and it bounces off the bricks and over the whole pit. Think Cecil Fielder used to hit balls on the roof in Tiger Stadium. Probably other players did too like Reggie Jackson, but we thought of Cecil first.

“Mark it 8 Dude”: when you first get to 8 it is appreciated by players if you say “mark it 8 dude”…..The Dude would Abide.

Skunk: this has been talked about but not included into the official rules as of now. When someone is down 11-0, sometimes 7-0, people start asking about a skunk or mercy rule.  Washers is a game you can comeback from….no skunks.

Good Strategy: this is when your washer is lying vertically against the front wall so it cannot be hit by any other washer, pretty rare….I post a picture of it soon.

Boost: this is when your washer is way short of the box but bounces off some other washer that was lying on the ground and then pops into the box….so it’s like the washer on the ground gave your washer a boost.

Use the backboard: some like to throw the washer directly into the cup and some like to use the backboard, this is when your washer hits off the back rail and pops back into the cup

Double Spiderman: this is like the spiderman but doubled……okay I’ll explain it….it’s when the washer hits 2 walls in a corner then flies to another corner and hits those 2 walls and then goes in the cup, it’s an amazing sight to see.

Raising the Roof: it’s when your washer bounces off your another one of your washers  and out of this box…..I’m pretty sure this happens because the washer in the box was “raising the roof” and pushed it out.

Arrogant Bastard: This is when you are so used to having the gold one that you keep using it for the start of a new game…….opponents don’t like this.

Poor Effort: When you miss the box by a lot.

Even washers: A phrase used for when you take someone’s gold one out of play.

Spiderman: this is when your washer bounces of 2 of the inside walls then makes its way into the cup.

Setting You Up: what someone will say while they are getting beaten really bad or after many consecutive losses. There is a lot of trash talking in washers, it’s something you have to get used to.

Fall away Shot: just like in basketball toss the washer and backpedal….I think when people do this they think it’s going in the box.

Follow Shot: very similar to the previous entry, but this one you walk towards your washer…….this is kind of a dumb thing to do.

Pauper’s Win: Named by Tom, this is a victory without ever getting any gold ones’. Very rare.

Fool’s Gold: This is when you accidently hand your opponent your “gold one”(they get to throw it on their turn)….so you are the FOOL? Not recommended in important washer matches. This is not to be mistaken for the blockbuster major motion picture starring Matthew McConaughey and Kate Husdon.

Full Automatic: This is the Eric Yost method of throwing washers, it is called full automatic because semi automatic would be too slow. If he ever pauses for a moment between washers it must be due to a jam.

Calibrator: Not sure if this is spelled correctly or if it is even a word(I’ll blame it on Eric) but this is how the “gold one” calibrates the last 2 washers, given you throw your “gold one’s” between your washers like I do…….very similar to the P.V.Timeout.

The Unfortunate: I came up with this after watching Mike throw some washers yesterday before our game. This is when you make 4 accurate tosses but they all bounce off the cup or out of the box……..I said, “that’s unfortunate.”

The Leave Early: When you start walking toward the other box thinking your opponent is done tossing, but he is not.(usually can get away with this move  one  time  per game until they say something)….this is the  most disrespectful thing you can do in washers….not recommended for new players.

The Lean Over: this  is when you almost do a “leave  early” but you catch yourself and just lean towards the other box.(blooper video for lean over 1)(blooper video for lean over 2)

Gentlemen’s Game: Not really sure the exact definition of this, but it kind of means that you don’t practice the night before you know you’re going to play washers.

THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID: this is usually the phrase someone yells out after a washer goes completely in the cup but then somehow pops back out.

LEAP-FROG: when you bounce your washer off another washer into the box that was short of the box

P.V. TIMEOUT:  invented by Eric Peevey(hence the name P.V.) this is after two horrible throws, you step away from the box to refocus……”guarantees at least 1 point on next 2 throws”

SWITCH: when your washer lands in the box knocking your opponents out of the box

SWITCH-EROO : named by Aaron, this is when you toss a washer in the cup and it knocks your opponent’s washer out of the cup

SUCK- EROO :  named by Dave K, this happened to Dave in WSOWI. It’s when you knock your own washer out of the cup

WHAT WAS THAT? : named by Greg and Aaron at the same time when Aaron did the unthinkable and landed a washer on the edge of the cup

THE GANDY : when you skip the washer in the box on 1 bounce(doesn’t work too well on grass or sand)

THE COUNTER ATTACK : when your opponent gets one in the cup, but you follow with 2 in the cup.

STRAUSBURG: Patterson’s “self given” nickname at the river after getting 1 washer in the cup in his first ever game of washers.

THE X-FILES:  when you get 3 in the box and 1 on the edge(by the way earns no gold one)…named the x-files because this was a situation that was talked about before but never thought would ever happen.

STICK IT: when the washer lands on the edge on a fly(may only be possible when the edge of the box is falling apart and the wood is splintered(Jones accomplished this on 7/3/10)

THE SNEAK ATTACK: when you bounce your opponents washer from the box into the cup(this is always bad for the person who threw it)

THE TERMINATOR: when the washer goes past the box but bounces back in, a sort of “I’ll be back” thing going on. (happens a lot on old shag carpet or poorly kept up lawns.

OLYMPICS: when 3 or more washers are lying in a way where they resemble the Olympic rings.
